The Poop Sheet

The Poop Sheet is the long-running official newsletter of American Legion China Post 1 (Generals Ward & Chennault and Lt. Helseth Post No. 1). It has been the primary means of communication and cohesion for the post’s worldwide membership since the beginning of its exile from Shanghai.

Origins

Cash Helseth published the first issue—“POOPSHEET NO. 1”—in August 1949, shortly after the Kowloon meeting at which he was empowered to keep the post alive. In that inaugural newsletter he described the post’s departure from China and the guidelines for operating in exile. One early statement captured the spirit of the effort: members recognized that even without a physical post home they remained Legionnaires dedicated to community, state, and nation.

At the time, the Poop Sheet was essentially the only practical link binding a scattered membership that no longer had a clubhouse, regular meetings, or local social life. Helseth continued producing it for decades (often with help from his wife Emmy) while running the post from successive locations, including their home in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Purpose and Role

  • Maintain formal American Legion status and institutional identity while in exile.
  • Share news, membership updates, historical material, and calls to action.
  • Foster camaraderie among members living across the United States and overseas.
  • Document the post’s ongoing activities, reunions, and efforts related to its Shanghai heritage (including later trips to China and work involving Ward’s monuments).

Post histories repeatedly describe the newsletter as the key instrument that prevented China Post 1 from fading away during the difficult early decades of exile.

Modern Form and Content

Today the Poop Sheet is published quarterly (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter editions) and is distributed primarily in PDF form. Recent issues are archived on the official website (chinapost1.org/poop-sheet/), with downloads available for current and recent years (examples include Spring 2024, Fall 2024, Winter 2026, etc.).

Typical contents include:

  • Commander’s Corner and Adjutant’s reports (membership numbers, renewals, administrative updates).
  • News from the Sons of The American Legion (SAL) Squadron, Auxiliary, and Dragon Riders (American Legion Riders chapter).
  • Reunion announcements, registration details, and after-action reports.
  • Member news, tributes to fallen comrades, and historical articles.
  • Store/emblem sales information, watering-hole (meeting place) updates, membership forms, and officer directories.
  • Occasional features on China-related heritage projects, Flying Tigers connections, or post travel.

Issues carry a strong copyright notice stating that names and information are strictly for members only and may not be reproduced or used for other purposes without the commander’s written approval. Submissions are directed to poopsheet@chinapost1.org.

Continuity and Significance

The Poop Sheet has remained in continuous publication for more than 75 years. It began as a simple typed newsletter under Helseth and evolved into a professionally produced digital publication with multiple contributors and an editorial team. It continues to serve the same core function it did in 1949: keeping a unique, globally dispersed American Legion post connected, informed, and institutionally alive while operating “in exile.”
