American Legion China Post 1 is a global elite network of military operators, defense contractors, international professionals, and veterans who spent their careers outside the wire. Born in Shanghai in 1919, forged in the fires of WWII POW camps, and driven into exile by communist forces in 1948—we are the only American Legion post on earth operating entirely in exile.

We have no physical building. Our territory is the world. Wherever two or more of us meet at a designated “Watering Hole” from Europe to the Pacific, the Post is in session.

Younger veterans often feel like traditional veteran groups don’t speak their language. We do. If your military career was defined by global deployments, joint task forces, international operations, or continuous movement, you just found your tribe.

THE QUALIFICATIONS

We hold our ranks to a strict standard. To align with the Dragons of China Post 1, you must meet the standard National Constitution requirements of The American Legion, plus carry the distinct character of international service:

1. Honorable Service during recognized periods of conflict.
2. A Global Service Footprint—distinguished by a significant career in active deployment, a meritorious period of international duty, or a current civilian career working in or supporting operations within the international community.

MEMBERSHIP IS STRICTLY INVITATION-ONLY (AND WE GUARD THE GATE)

China Post 1 does not accept random online sign-ups. We protect the integrity and security of our global network. To join our ranks, you must find and meet a current member in person at one of our global watering holes or community functions to be vetted.

Let’s be completely honest: if you are just trying to join this post to wear our iconic Dragon Riders patch, this is not the place for you.

Yes, our unique Dragon patch turns a lot of heads when we walk into an American Legion hall. Yes, plenty of posts across the country have never even heard of us—which, by definition, is the entire point of why we are named a post “in exile.” We operate in the shadows, outside the brick-and-mortar walls, across international lines. We are not a status symbol or a collector’s club.

We are looking for long-term, high-speed people who are genuinely here to put in the work and back up the brothers and sisters who have survived the exact same deployments we have.
